Is it ok to take natural progesterone cream and prometrium (progesterone pills)? I know I have low progesterone and my doctor only prescribed me 200 mg once a day instead of twice a day so I'm taking the pill in the morning and cream at night. Is this ok to do when your pregnant?
KandyKat replied: "You should check with your doctor. I would not take anything without his/her approval."
poshblond replied: "i wouldn't take both/ you'll shut down ovulation- do as your doctor says/ i was given progesterone after ovulation 50 mg a day til menses or pregnancy if pregnant he will adjust dosage appropriately until placenta takes over making progesterone around 3rd month/ then he should wean you off it"
Prometrium claims to be from wild yam but is there a synthetic component to it? I want to know the truth about Prometrium. Is it natural from wild yam or has it been synthetically altered so the drug company makes a killing in profit from it??

Jen D replied: "It appears to actually be made from wild yam (with a lot of peanut oil). However, there are plenty of varieties of wild yam at every health food store. And if you choose one of those, you wouldn't be supporting the pharmaceutical industries attempt to take over the supplement market."
I'm on a progesterone pill to jump start my period after being off the pill. How long until my period starts? I'm on day 8 of the 10 day pills. I'm on these natural hormone ones. I think they are called Prometrium or something like that. My doctor didn't give an exact time when my period would start up. So, I was wondering if any of you out there have taken this, and if you started your period during the time you were taking the pills, or perhaps after. If after, about how many days after you stopped taking the pills? I know there is a very very slight chance that I could be pregnant, but as of two days ago, I was testing negative. But I'm just wondering how long is a normal time for your period to resume after the pills before I need to either retest, or go in and see my doctor.
aqx99 replied: "I just finished taking 10 days of progesterone to jumpstart my period as well (I have PCOS). I took the last pill on Thursday, and I got my period Tuesday. I would say wait until a week has passed since your last pill, and if you still don't have your period retest or go see your doctor."

My doctor did have me take a pregnancy test before I started taking them. I actually asked her what would happen if I was pregnant, if it would cause any harm. She said they actually use this hormone to help sustain a pregnancy, so that no, it wouldn't cause any harm.
MJ replied: "Normally it takes 7-10 days after being on pill for the periods to start,U can wait for 12 days & call back your doc if the periods havent started by then.."
Nicky replied: "I didn't take the natural hormone. But, on progesterone I had my cycle usually about 3 days after taking my last pill. I'm confused by the pregnancy thing. Most doctors make sure you aren't pregnant prior to taking progesterone because it induces your cycle and will end a pregnancy, if one exists. Good luck!!"

PROMETRIUM & WOMEN TTC w/PREVIOUS MISCARRIAGES/CHEM PREGS? Women TTC who have had previous miscarriages and/or chemical pregnancies (i.e., very early miscarriges): Did your doctor prescribe prometrium (progesterone)?
If so, how much progesterone did your doctor prescribe? (i.e., 100 mg twice a day). Did you take it orally or as a vag suppository? Did it help you conceive and birth a child? Did it not help? AND: At what point in your cycle were you prescribed the prometrium? How old were you when the doc prescribed the prometrium? How long did you use the prometrium?
Bonus question: Has anyone had success with natural progesterone CREAM? When using it a few days after ovulation, did it really prevent a suspected miscarriage?
I read a lot about prometrium and am wondering how successful it really is with preventing miscarriages. In some cases, luteal phase deficiencies result in insufficient progesterone production, and thus the horrible m/c and/or chemical pregnancies.
Thanks for sharing
Tina replied: "We had a chemical pregnancy after an injectible IUI cycle. My RE did not feel that I had a progesterone deficit but felt that it could not hurt. Unfortunately, our next IUI also resulted in failure. After that we moved onto IVF and it seems to be pretty standard practice to prescribe it for IVF - they mess with the hormones with all of the fertility meds that it is best to add progesterone back in.
I use it as a vaginal suppository - 3 times a day (I think it is 200mg tabs). I started it right after ovulation / egg retrieval. As we got a BFP - we will be continuing it throughout the first trimester.
I have never tried the cream.
Basically, in my case, the RE does not feel that I need it . . . but he also told me that it wouldn't hurt . . . so I deal with the messy suppositories with little complaint!
Hope this helps!"
ljb replied: "I was prescribed Prometrium at some point during my treatments for recurrent pregnancy loss -- I took it vaginally, 3x/day (originally 2x/day, but upped based on tested progesterone levels during treatment). I believe it was 200mg 3x/day but I can't be certain without checking my records. For each cycle during which I took Prometrium, I started taking it three days after ovulation, presumably (conjecture on my part) because three days of elevated BBTs are considered "confirmation" of ovulation, and you don't want to start taking any progesterone supps too early in the cycle.
DId it help? Who can say? That's not an attempt to be snide, believe me. The medical studies are inconclusive -- at best -- and I certainly don't claim to know any better. Did I continue to -- eventually -- have a successful pregnancy? Yes. But whether the use of progesterone supplementation was a factor is anyone's guess. That said, as for MY guess: no, I've come to believe it doesn't really help. I've found there are essentially two schools of thought when it comes to progesterone issues, and, consequently, two different approaches to treatment. One: low progesterone levels are a problem in and of themselves, and treating that problem can help reduce the risk of subsequent pregnancy loss. Two: low progesterone levels are merely a symptom of a problem that occurred/occurs during the follicular phase of your cycle, and as far as the connection between low progesterone and pregnancy loss, it's more likely that low progesterone occurs as a result of a non-viable pregnancy, rather than that low progesterone causes the loss of an otherwise viable and healthy pregnancy. In talking with other women facing similar issues I found that more and more doctors (reproductive endocrinologists) were looking at ways to "boost" ovulation rather than directly treating progesterone levels -- *however* while the medical research has thus far failed to really support the hypothesis that supplementation helps prevent loss of an otherwise healthy pregnancy there is nothing out there that would suggest it can in any way cause harm, so many doctors do (or will, if asked) continue to prescribe supplementation on a more or less "just in case" basis. Sorry to be so run-on, but when asked whether Prometrium helped me....this is my honest answer to that question!
As for the rest of it: I probably started the Prometrium when I was 36....maybe 35. (Amazing that I now cannot pull the exact date out of my head!) I used it for several cycles -- some natural cycles, others medicated. As for the latter, I never used Prometrium in conjunction with Clomid for the simple reason that Clomid did not work for me, and while I did ovulate on my own I did not ovulate when I tried Clomid. I did use Prometrium in conjunction with injectables. Eventually I moved on to more invasive treatments and no Prometrium was warranted because I experienced the dubious pleasures of progesterone by IM injection.
As far as the creams go, it has been a bit of time since I read up on all of this stuff, but there are different "kinds" of progesterone supplements out there, to say nothing of the very different absorption issues depending on how the supp is administered, and if progesterone levels were truly an issue I personally would not take the creams, whether they were OTC herbal homeopathic creams or, if such a thing exists, a more "western" "medical" form that's simply administered as a cream. But then, I wouldn't even take the Prometrium orally, when the absorption rates for vaginal administration are so superior.
I don't believe there is any way to say whether taking Prometrium "really prevent[ed] a suspected miscarriage," but who knows. It can't hurt, as far as I"m concerned. As indicated, I had a lot of treatments and they were certainly more invasive than Prometrium pills put in a very private place(!) but yes, all of that did work and I am now a very tired, very happy, mom of two.
I hope that helps.
There are some really helpful message boards out there where you might find other women with loads of experience and opinions on this issue, and other related issues -- I highly recommend the fertility forums at (and also which is not limited to women underoing IVF).
Hope that helps, and BEST of luck.
ETA I should have noted in the first place, I had some losses before Prometrium was introduced, but I also had losses when I was taking the Prometrium. So in that regard it's accurate to say that the Prometrium did not prevent miscarriage (although that's not what any doctor would tell you it does anyway!)."
Who has been on Prometrium to help them get pregnant? Me and my husband have been trying for 8 months and no luck, my Dr. put me on Prometrium 100mg b/c I did not have enough natural progesterone in my body to get pregnant. The egg is being fertilized like is supposed to but not implanting. (Make since?)This is my first month taking it and I took it days 15-26 of my cycle and i'm normally a 32 day cycle but my dr told me it would change to a 28 day cycle on this med. Day 28 was today. Just wanted to see if there was a chance I could get pregnant the first month on it!?
Just wanted to see if anyone is on it and what it did for you?
Thanx

wash replied: "Prometrium used early in your cycle can help to increase the sticky inner lining of your uterus, thus helping with the implantation of your fertilized egg. After my IUI, I was put on vaginal Prometrium suppositories and stayed on them. I wasn't told to take them for only a week."
Prometrium, Ovulation, and BBT? My husband and I have just started infertility treatment. once I get my next period, I'm supposed to call and schedule my HSG. Unfortunately, this cycle I had bleeding and/or spotting for 18 days. My doc put me on Prometrium to stop the bleeding so I would know when my actual period started next time.
I generally chart my temperatures, but didn't do so this cycle. When I have long periods like that, I don't tend to ovulate, so I decided to not worry about it. Well, out of curiosity, I checked my CP yesterday (day two of the Prometrium) and was very surprised to find it HSO, and that I also had a lot of EWCM. I didn't think I would ovulate on the Prometrium since it is supposed to mimic the second phase of the cycle...I thought my hormones would be "off".
So, to humor myself, I took my temperature this morning. Since it's only the second temp I've taken this cycle, I know it can't tell me much, but after 4 years of off and on charting I know what a post ovulation and a pre ovulation temperature looks like for me--it was 98.2, a post ovulation temp. Could I have actually o'd yesterday while on the Prometrium, or could the Prometrium have been the cause of my high temp? Is there any harm in ovulating while on Prometrium? We bd'd the day before and the day of my fertile cp and cm, so now I've gotten myself hopeful that MAYBE this time it worked....ugh.
I guess my other concern is that if I did ovulate and I stop the Prometrium in a week like I'm supposed to, could it negatively affect my progesterone levels? Like if we did conceive, the drop in progesterone could cause a chemical or miscarriage. Or should my natural progesterone (hopefully) be enough to sustain it regardless of the fact that I was taking 400mg orally?
Sorry for all the questions--I hope this makes sense!
The Prometrium (not Provera) was prescribed because after a couple of days it will stop the bleeding (and it did) and then within a few days of stopping the meds, it will cause my period to start in the form of withdrawal bleeding. I am taking 200mg/2x a day.
My abbreviations are HSO (high, soft, open cervix--the most fertile) and EWCM (eggwhite cervical mucus, the most fertile). I've read a little about the possibility of Prometrium causing ovulation within a couple of days of starting it, but it doesn't seem very common. I guess all I can do is wait and see what happens when I stop it, whether my period (af) starts or not.
Thanks for the input.
Skadoctor1 replied: "Prometrium is a synthetic form of progesterone. Its generally prescribed for women who either didnt have a period in the form of Provera (take 1 pill a day, for 10 days, stop it, and then within 3 days you should start bleeding) or, women who are thought to have a progesterone defect (not enough to support pregnancy) which can result in a luteal phase defect and cause miscarriage.
Im surprised your dr. gave it to you to stop the bleeding.
I cant disect your abbreviations, but your temp. will slightly increase while taking prometrium, as it would had your body increased its own progesterone level naturally, as the increased progesterone (natural) indicates ovulation, which triggers your bodies temp. to become slightly elevated (about 3-5 degree points).
The trick w/ prometrium is that, if you are trying to see if you ovulated, you cant be on prometrium and get blood tested to see if you ovulated because naturally during your cycle, when your body produces an LH surge, its caused by an increase in progesterone. And by taking a progesterone therapy regime like prometrium, it increases the progesterone count they are looking for to see if you ovulated or not.
Generally before ovulation your progesterone is less than 3. After, any thing over 3 indicates you ovulated. When you get bloodwork to see if you ovulated, they are checking your progesterone level. By taking prometrium, it is increasing your number above 3 on its own, and so you will get told you ovulated even if you didnt, but the prometrium is giving a false reading.
Natural things occur when you ovulate: increased basal temp. being one. So, any ovulation testers or labwork will show you ovulated even if you really didnt for reasons stated above.
Prometrium or progesterone helps prepare a thick lining of your uterus in case you got pregnant, the baby had a rich, thick lining to implant inside.
Your cycle goes kind of like this... you have a natural baseline temp., estrogen increases until you get an LH surge, mid cycle, which also causes your basal to increase by 3 points for 3+ days. Progesterone increases then begins to decrease. When it decreases, your basal will drop (generally the day of or before you get your period). The decrease in progesterone causes your body to trigger and release the lining of your uterus (IE: you have a period). If you are pregnant, your basal will remain elevated throughout your pregnancy until you give birth.
The prometrium is prescribed generally as 100 mg or 200 mg initially and you are told to take it from either day 16 of your cycle or when you miss a period, in case you are pregnant.
I dont know the reasons your dr. prescribed it in this fashion, I would talk to him/her about it and how it works etc. But that is how its generally given and why.
If you have a progesterone deficency and are pregnant, stopping progesterone therapy can result in miscarriage. If you dont have a progesterone problem, but are on a therapy, it can cause similar because it drastically reduces your bodies progesterone level which can trigger your body to release the lining, which causes miscarriage.
You only need progesterone therapy until around week 12-16 of the pregnancy, when the baby doesnt need the suppliment and is pretty much independant. But, consult your dr. for specific risks.
Hope this helped some."
What is wrong with my body? Is there anything else that I can do to help my chances of concieving? Hi, here is a little background info to possibly help answering my questions. I am 24 years old, and I just previously as of 8 mnths ago found out that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. Since then I have been put on several medications ~ Metformin 500 mg 3x's daily, Prometrium 200 mg (progestorone has always been low and use it to jump start my period), lexapro 10 mg 1x daily to help with meltdowns - this is a wonder pill, Primacare One, Chlomed 150 mg days (went from 50 mg to now where I am), I am also taking extra vitamins Folic Acid 800 mg, and Zinc 50 mg~ I have been trying to lay off the junk food and eat healthier ~ More bananas and potatoes and broccolli. A little more background ~ Miscarried Jan. 20003 ~ I was 6 wks along ~ Natural miscarriage.... and in July 2005 I miscarried ~ I was 10 wks along ~they couldn't find a hard beat ~ I had a missed miscarriage so they did a DNC @ 11 weeks. Since August 2005 we have been trying to get pregnant. What else can I do if anything?
applesoup replied: "I'm not very familiar with the medications you're on.
First of all, are you extremely over-weight or under-weight? Do a search on yahoo for Body Mass Index, figure out your score, and see if you fall in the range. I know a few people trying to get pregnant-- The doctor told one to gain weight (she's super skinny) and another to loose weight. Going 10 lbs either way might help.
Have you tried not doing anything for a month? I know it's hard to listen to, but they say sometimes the best remedy is to forget that you're trying.
You should go to. There's a lot of women on there that know what you're going through, are trying different things (like inserting egg whites--random, I know, but it works for some!)
It may be time to do something more drastic--like taking fertility drugs to ovulate(not sure how that works with your syndrome)...or maybe even invitro?
I don't know if you're religious--but prayer goes a long way.
I know so many people going through what you're going through. Hang in there--it'll happen eventually. Good luck!"
Does anyone know if taking Prometrium in early pregnancy is Ok if also still Breastfeeding? I required Prometrium (progesterone) until 14 weeks pregnant with our first child conceived through IVF, and now (surpize!) am 8 wks pregnant with #2 (naturally)
Is it OK to take my Prometrium to maintain this pregnancy as I am still Breastfeeding- is it safe for the breastmilk and my older baby? He Breastfeeds 3x a day, although I think my milk supply has decreased alot since becoming pregnant. I heard you body's natural progesterone is decreased through breastfeeding so I don;t want to lose this baby. I am taking 300 mg Prometrium daily (3 tabs, 1 every 8 hrs) vaginally (instead of 600mg last pregnancy).
mehub21 replied: "i would definately talk to your dr about that... s/he would be able to tell you whether or not there is need for it, and if ti would affect the older child..."
Teardrops and Rainbows replied: "I would switch to formula. Breastfeeding naturally causes the uterus to contract and causes your body to release hormones that naturally cause the contractions in the uterus.
In the old days when doctors wanted to do a trial of labor like the modern day Oxytocin Stress Tests, they did nipple stimulation which would stimulate contractions.
Also, nipple stimulation is used in women that have just had their baby and are bleeding heavily because it releases the bodies natural hormones that will stimulate the uterus to contract and slow the bleeding.
Talk to your doctor. If you had problems maintaining your last pregnancy, I would definitely stop breastfeeding and go to formula."
Prometrium during pregnancy? Doc prescribed me 200mg at bedtime, but it is killing me the next day. I get REALLY terrible headaches. Does anyone know about a natural alternative? The reason they prescribe it is that my progesterone level is 12, they want it at 20.......
Vanessa replied: "The reason they tell you to take it at night, is because it can make you sleepy. It is o.k to take it a few hours before you go to sleep. As long as you know that you will be home, and not operating any heavy machinery. Which.. if you are pregnant.. you shouldn't be doing anyways. I took it in August, and October 2007, in order to bring on my period. And took it during the day.. after I got home from work. Cause I knew I was not going to go out anymore. And it worked just fine. GOOD LUCK"
MamaWasichana replied: "Thank God yours take a day to 'kill you' mine - 200 mg, makes me queezy, drowsy and on a few ocassions I fainted about 30 minutes after taking it in the evening. So I learnt my lesson. Do all you need to do, feed the kids - have them in pajama's and ready and then I can take the Prometrium.
The doc started me on it when my progesterone levels went from 17 to 12 and a week after, the levels went to 43.3. I do not care much on the side effects, since there is nothing fatal - and nothing that can affect the baby because I just had a miscarriage 2 weeks before I got pregnant with this pregnancy, and the only reason I carried was because my progesterone levels were low...on this context, what is fainting, neusea, queeziness and all that - as long as it does what it is made for - "maintain a pregnancy"
However, depending on your health history, I would tell the doc that it is giving you headaches - but remember that one of the symptoms of pregnancy is "terrible headaches" - my second baby, i wasnt on prometrium but had to stop working due to what I thought were migranes - and tyleno wast working - when there is nothing else I can safely take when preggo!
it might be the prometrium or the pregnancy, causing headaches due to the increasing blood volume etc.
Natural alternatives - your brain communicates to your ovaries that you need progesterone...if the brain communicates and the ovaries do not produce enough progesterone while pregnant, the brain then tells the uterus to expel the baby (miscarriage) because there is not enough progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. Unfortunately - this is the only natural alternatives, and our bodies - THIS TIME are not cooperating so we have to be on this nasty prometrium.
however, whatever works to keep the baby in there - if it means that dancing in the rain naked will keep my baby in there - am IN!!
I wish you the best with your pregnancy!"
